I graduated philosophy and comparative literature at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana, in 1984. Up until 1990, he taught philosophy and sociology to multiple high schools in Ljubljana and in that same year, as a member of Socialist Party of Slovenia, he entered the National Council of Slovenia. During 1990 and 1992, he was a director of programming at RTV Slovenia, in the period from 1994 to 1996 he was the Minister of Culture for the Republic of Slovenia, 1996-1999 Secretary General of the Slovenian Republic; 1999-2001, he was the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and in 2001 he was appointed ambassador to the FRY. In 2004, he was diagnosed with cancer which he successful defeated. Today, he is an international advisor for the area of Southeast Europe and Western Balkans.
